Screening guidelines

Asymptomatic women ages 50 to 74, of average risk, should be screened for breast cancer with mammography every 2 years.

Routine screening is not recommended for women who fall outside of BreastCheck’s program guidelines. The benefits and harms of screening should be discussed with patients to support informed decision making.

Routine clinical breast exams and breast self exams are not recommended. Encourage women to know how their breasts normally look and feel.

BreastCheck’s guidelines and operations are evidence-based and follow the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care guidelines.
